Elsewhere - Artspace Reception Recap

March 4, 2016

INTERVIEW & PHOTOGRAPHY BY: JOSHUA JENKINS

Just two weeks ago, we had the privilege of witnessing art curated by an admired artist, Hong Hong. We are no stranger to her personal work that features a large usage of kozo (Japanese term for 'paper' - created and processed by her hands) but we hadn't been exposed to her facilitating a show and involving other collaborators. This took place at Art Space, which has its own rotation of shows involving residents of the building as well as outside independent artists. I found this show shares a great degree of media and diversity between color tones, texture pieces and motioned installations.

Contributing artists: Andres Chaparro, Hong Hong, Jourdan Joly, Terrance Regan, Sarah Rohlfing, Amy Vensel and Adam Viens.

After speaking with Hong, she had this to share:

"I love looking at art, and I love finding work that I am genuinely excited to experience. There is something magical about the process of catching something out of the corner of your eye, of slowing down, of discovery. So, the desire to put together an exhibition, something for others to view and perceive, has always been floating like a little buoy in the back of my mind. One day, the opportunity to do so presented itself to me, and I said yes. Luckily, I had been in Connecticut for long enough at that point to have met several artists whose work I admired. I wanted to bring these artists together and to bring their artwork to Hartford. That's how Elsewhere initially began."

View some of the work below and keep a look out for more independent shows in the near future.
